1,193,137. Preparation of crotonaldehydeketene addition compounds. DAICEL Ltd. 30 Nov., 1967, No. 54620/67. Heading C2C. Crotonaldehyde-ketene addition compounds, which consist essentially of polyesters, possibly formed by ring opening of 3-hydroxy-4- hexenoic acid-(1)-lactone, and which may be used in the production of sorbic acid and its salts, are prepared by reacting ketene with crotonaldehyde in the presence of a bivalent metal complex of acetylacetone in which the metal is zinc, cadmium or manganese. Specified complexes are zinc, hydrated zinc, cadmium, and manganese (II) acetylacetonates and a compound of the formula (CH 3 COO)(acac) 3 Zn 2 in which acac is an acetylacetanato-group. The process may be carried out continuously.
