Abstract
1,192,642. Polyimide coatings. MINNESOTA MINING & MFG. CO. 26 July, 1967 [27 July, 1966], No. 34438/67. Headings B2E and B2K. [Also in Division C3] Polyamide acids convertible to polyimides are derived from an aromatic tetracarboxylic anhydride and a diamine of the formula: where An represents unsubstituted aromatic radicals and R<SP>2</SP> is a radical containing at least 2 aromatic rings each of which is attached directly to one of the C atoms shown in the formula. The polyamide-acid may be used conventionally e.g. in the usual solvents for filmforming or varnish compositions or as moulding powders, optionally with fillers, dyes or pigments. The polyimides also are soluble in methylene chloride, tetrahydrofuran and chloroform but not in many common solvents which are specified. The polyimide solution may be used for coatings, impregnating glass or other fibres, laminating sheets or metal cloth or paper, and fabricating filaments, moulded products and self-supporting films. Coatings. In Examples methylene chloride solutions of the polyimide are used to coat aluminium, copper and titanium plates, copper foil and copper and nichrome wire by dipping or casting. For the wire varnishes 1% of chlorobenzene is included in the solution as levelling agent.
