Abstract

1,192,366. Missile guidance. BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORP. Ltd. 24 Nov., 1967 [10 Oct., 1966], No. 29772/66. Heading H4D. The Specification describes an air-to-air missile guidance system wherein the target is viewed by a closed circuit television system and the controller is provided with means whereby a light spot on the television display screen can be positioned on the target image and signals from said means indicating the position of the light spot are used to produce flight control signals for the missile. The light spot positioning means may comprise joy-stick 2 connected to two orthogonally positioned potentiometers yielding two orthogonal component signals V x and V y . The signal V x is compared with the line scan voltage in comparator 7 and V y is compared with the frame scan voltage in comparator 8. Detected equality causes the comparators to produce a pulse which triggers the respective monostable circuit 11 or 12. Simultaneous triggered outputs from circuits 11 and 12 causes a bright-up pulse to be added at 15 to the video signal at 16, so producing the light spot in the correct position. The signals V x and V y only represent the position of the target when the light spot is correctly positioned on the target response. The controller is thus provided with a marker switch, Fig. 2 (not shown) which is operated when said correct positioning is observed and gates signals V x and V y to a computer. A clock signal is simultaneously gated to the computer, giving an indication of the time that the target is at the indicated position. The positioning of the spot may be aided by feedback signals predicating the future position and derived by integrating rate of change of V x and V y signals (Fig. 3, not shown).
