[Also in Division C4] Hair is dyed with nitro dyes of formula I in which R is an optionally substituted lower alkyl group, Z is a group of formula II in which R<SP>2</SP> is a hydrogen atom or a methyl or nitro group, or of formula-COR<SP>3</SP> in which R<SP>3</SP> is a lower alkyl, Q is halogen atom or a group-NHR<SP>1</SP> in which R<SP>1</SP> is a rower alkyl hydroxyalkyl or alkoxyalkyl group, or R<SP>1</SP> is a group -(CH 2 ) 2 R<SP>4</SP>, R<SP>5</SP> in which R<SP>4</SP> and R<SP>5</SP> which may be same or different are hydrogen or low alkyl or hydroxyalkyl group or together with the nitrogen atom form a heterocyclic ring, n is an integer 2-6, provided that R<SP>4</SP> does not represent a lower alkyl or hydroxyalkyl group when Z is a benzene sulphonyl radical and the alkyl moieties, in R, R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP>, R<SP>4</SP> and R<SP>5</SP> have up to 6 carbon atoms, or a salt or quaternary derivative thereof.
