[Also in Division C3] 2-Ethylthioethyl methacrylate is prepared by direct reaction of 2-ethylthioethanol with methacrylic acid, or by a transesterification reaction between 2-ethylthioethanol and a methacrylate ester, e.g. the methyl or ethyl ester. Reaction may be effected in the presence of tetraisopropyl titanate and of diphenylphenylenediamine (polymerization inhibitor).
