Abstract

1,191,624. Moulding insulating materials. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 1 Aug., 1967 [2 Aug., 1966], No. 34609/66. Heading B5A. [Also in Division C3] A filled or reinforced heat cured synthetic resin insulator component of improved dielectric loss angle (tan #) is moulded by applying an alternating electric stress of at least 7À5 Kv./in. e.g. of 50 or 60 c.p.s., across substantially all the moulding, whilst it is being heat cured, at least until the resin is gelled and preferably until it is fully cured; the applied alternating stress is maintained lower than that necessary appreciably to accelerate the resin cure or to cause an electrical flashover and is believed to act to cause local heating and breakdown and dispersion of contaminants which would otherwise cause a high loss factor at the resin/filler interfaces. The mould walls for a flat plate may be insulated and the interior surfaces of opposed walls thereof may comprise plates of copper or a spray deposition thereof connected to exterior terminals whereby the stress is applied as the mould containing vacuum mixed epoxy resin and hardener and dried silica flour is cured within an oven. A glass cloth reinforced plate is similarly produced. Glass cloth reinforced synthetic resin insulator tubes, e.g. for air blast circuit breakers, are produced by winding the cloth on to a steel mandrel which is inserted into a cylindrical mould of insulating material coated in the interior with electrically conducting material. The glass cloth may be impregnated with an adduct of bis-phenol A and epichlorohydrin with aromatic amine hardener or, alternatively the resin may be cast into the mould, preferably via a groove extending axially along the mould internal wall to the base thereof. Alternatively, the mould parts comprising electrodes may be formed of electrically conducting material, with suitable separating insulation. The electrical stress may be applied to the mould electrodes before the reinforcing material is impregnated providing that it is maintained until the resin has gelled.
