Abstract

1,191,584. Niewland catalysts. FMC CORP. 5 April, 1968 [7 April, 1967], No. 16404/68. Heading B1E. [Also in Division C2] Niewland catalysts comprise (a) cupric chloride (b) Li, Na or K chloride, (c) cerium chloride and (d) SiO 2 gel having a surface area of at least 150 m<SP>2</SP>/gm and an average pore size of at least 60Š. The catalysts may be prepared conventionally e.g. by impregnating the appropriate SiO 2 gel with a solution of mixed chlorides. The catalyst must contain at least 1.5% total of (a), (b) and (c) on the carrier and ratio (b) to (a) 0.6:1 to 3:1 and (c) to (a) of 0.09:1 to 3:1.
