Abstract
1,190,927. Testing magnetic properties. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Aug. 10, 1967 [Aug.11, 1966], No.35929/66. Heading G1N. To test a fluid suspension containing acicular magnetic particles used in the manufacture of magnetic recording tape, a sample of the suspension is coated on to a moving tape and is subjected to an orientating magnetic field to produce discrete regions of orientated particles on the tape which are then, while the coating is still fluid, subjected to a disorientating magnetic field in the opposite direction, the magnitude of which is varied until no remanence is detected by a detector head 12, the value of the disorientating field then being read from meter 16. The measurement process may be entirely automatic. The suspension may be applied only to the centre of the tape and the capstan 3 may have a cut away channel in the middle of its traction surface. The suspension may be applied in a series of discrete bands, Fig. 3 (not shown), in which case the orientating magnetic field may be produced by a permanent magnet (25). The invention may be used to measure the rheological properties of paint by adding a small proportion of magnetic particles to the paint.
