Abstract

1,190,810. Screw-cutting lathes. COLCHESTER LATHE CO. Ltd. 30 Sept., 1968 [3 July, 1967], No. 30482/67. Heading B3T. [Also in Division F2] A gear-box for a screw-cutting lathe provides a ratio between two shafts of 288: 7315 (very closely approximating to 1: 25À4) so that English and metric screw-threads can be cut on the same machine. The gear-box includes selectable auxiliary step-up or step-down gearing so that a range of multiples or fractions of the basic ratio can be obtained. In the drawings, the ringed numbers indicate the teeth numbers on respective gear-wheels. In Fig. 1, a lathe spindle 1 drives a gear-box input shaft 4 via gears 2, 3, 5. For metric threads, a clutch 7, 8 is engaged and a 4 T.P.I. lead-screw 14 is driven via a shaft 9, a shaft 16, and gears 19, 15. Either gear 18 is slidable to mesh any one of gears 20, or shaft 16 carries an array of gears (not shown), each having a number of teeth which is a multiple of 11, selectively driven by the gears 20. For English threads, a clutch 11, 12 is engaged, and gears 6, 17 meshed, to drive the lead-screw 14 via gears 6, 17, the shaft 16, the shaft 9, and the clutch 11, 12 (Fig. 2, not shown). To cut a 19 T.P.I. pipe thread, clutches 7, 8 and 11, 12 are both engaged for a straight through drive. The leadscrew 14 moves a nut 21 connected to a threadcutting tool.
