Abstract

1,190,684. Preparing paraformaldehyde. SOC. ITALIANA RESINE S.p.A. 9 July, 1968 [17 July, 1967], No. 32670/68. Heading C3P. Paraformaldehyde is obtained by a process comprising (a) concentrating an aqueous formaldehyde solution until it contains between 75 to 93% formaldehyde, (b) solidifying the solution to form solid discrete particles, and (c) curing the outside layer of the solid particles in the presence of a catalyst, preferably incorporated in step (b), comprising basic organic compounds of a pK b between 2 and 6. A further catalyst component may be a basic organic substance of a pK b between 6 and 12. Examples of the former are methylamine, trimethylamine, triethylamine, tributylamine, ethylenediamine, piperidine, and 1,4-diazo-bicyclo-[2,2, 2] octane, while examples of the latter are pyridine, p - toluidine, phenyhydrazine, hydroxylamine, aniline and trimethyldodecylammonium hydroxide. The particulate paraformaldehyde may be obtained by spraying the concentrated solution, suitably with the curing catalyst being supplied during the spraying step. The concentration step may be performed in two stages with an intermediate curing step.
