1,190,610. Luminescent screens. PHILIPS ELECTRIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 28 Dec., 1967 [31 Dec., 1966], No. 58842/67. Heading C4S. A method of manufacturing a cathode-ray tube (e.g. a colour tube) comprising a ZnCdS phosphor layer includes applying a suspension of coated particles (of 5 micron size, for example) of the phosphor in an organic binder (e.g. polyvinyl alcohol), the particles being completely coated with a layer of inorganic material (e.g. magnesium, calcium or zinc phosphate, magnesium or barium silicate, silicic acid produced by hydrolysis of an organic silicon compound, but preferably calcium silicate), the layer being permeable to electrons and the luminescent light emitted by the phosphor, the inorganic material not being water soluble. The coated particles may be green luminescine ZnCdS: Ag (e.g. 34% by wt. CdS). In a colour C.R.T., green luminescing ZnCdS: Ag, blue and red lumines. cing ZnS: Ag and europium activated yttrium vanadate respectively are instanced.
