Abstract
1,190,116. Polyester compositions. KOPPERS CO. Inc. 8 May, 1968 [5 June, 1967], No. 21883/68. Headings C3P and C3R. An unsaturated polyester comprises 50 mole per cent of a dihydric alcohol component and 50 mole per cent of an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid component, wherein (a) the dihydric alcohol component comprises, to a total of 50 mole per cent, (1) 0-50 mole per cent, 1,4-cyclohexane dimethanol; (2) 0-30 mole per cent neopentyl glycol; and (3) 0-45 mole per cent of a further dihydric alcohol R(OH) 2 , where R is a C 2-6 alkylene, hydrogenated phenylene, hydrogenated biphenylene or a hydrogenated bis-phenylene radical where R 2 , R 3 , R 4 and R 5 are H or C 1-6 alkyl and Y is a C 1-6 alkylene radical; and (b) the unsaturated dicarboxylic acid component comprises, to a total of 50 mole per cent (1) 5-44 mole per cent of an unsaturated, hydrogenated aromatic dicarboxylic acid; and (2) 6-45 mole per cent of maleic or fumaric acids or maleic anhydride; and wherein the total molar quantity of 1,4- cyclohexane dimethanol and/or neopentyl glycol and of unsaturated hydrogenated aromatic dicarboxylic acid is at least 20 mole per cent of the total quantity of dihydric alcohol component and unsaturated dicarboxylic acid component. By the term " unsaturated hydrogenated aromatic dicarboxylic acid" " is meant a dicarboxylic acid having an aromatic nucleus which has been partially hydrogenated leaving one double bond in the ring, and which is capable of forming an intramolecular anhydride, or the intramolecular anhydride thereof, e.g. tetrahydrophthalic anhydride, endo-cis-bicyclo (2.2.1) - 5 - heptene - 2,3 - dicarboxylic acid anhydride or its C 1-6 alkyl derivative. The further dihydric alcohol R(OH) 2 may be ethylene glycol, 1,2-propanediol or 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propanediol. When copolymerized with an ethylenically unsaturated monomer, in which the polyester is soluble, e.g. styrene, vinyl toluene, the resulting resin has good electrical, mechanical and high-temperature properties.
