[Also in Division C4] An aerosol spray composition for use in feminine hygiene particularly for application to the vaginal area comprising a highly volatile aerosol propellant (defined - see below), a polymeric bactericide according to British Patent No. 905,195, and either at least 0.1%. by weight of an emollient substance or mixture of substances selected from (i) fats and oils, and (ii) oily and fatty non-ionic emulsifying agents, or up to 7% by weight of talc or starch, the composition being substantially non-irritant when sprayed on to the human skin and mucous membrane of the vaginal area. "Highly volatile" means substantially at least as volatile as difluoroethane. Suitable propellants include monochlorodifluoromethane, monochlorotrichloromethane, dichlorodifluoromethane, difluoroethane, and propane. Less volatile compounds may be included provided that the mixture as a whole is "highly volatile". A preferred bactericide is polynoxylin. Other bactericides such as hexachlorophene, cetrimide, or bis-p-chlorophenyldiguanidohexane may also be included. Suitable emollients include purcelline oil, a silicone oil, hexyl laurate, polyoxyethylene sorbitan monolaurate, oxyethylated lanoline, isopropyl myristate and oxyethylated oleyl alcohol.
