Liquid is filtered through a porous glass plate I fused with glass pipe 3 and flows past cock 5 and into vessel 17. Pipe 9 controlled by cock 10 communicates with pipe 7 surrounding pipe 3 at its lower, end. Vessels 11, 17 are connected to the pipes by ground glass joints at 12 and 18. As described, the vessels are secured by springs held by lugs 4, 15 or 8, 19. To drive liquid through filter plate 1, vessel 11 may be heated or vessel 17 priorly evacuated via pipe 9. Plate 1 may be solventwashed, or blast-cleaned by removing vessel 17 to allow pressure equalisation.
