Abstract
1,189,490. Spare wheel carrier. BRITISH MOTOR CORP. Ltd. 1 Nov., 1968 [18 Nov., 1967], No. 52536/67. Heading B7J. A motor vehicle spare wheel carrier assembly mounted below the vehicle boot floor panel 8 comprises a carrier frame 1 pivoted about a substantially horizontal axis via brackets 7 and capable of securely holding a wheel 2; a cable 10 attached to the frame 1, for lowering and raising the frame, the cable passing through an aperture in the panel 8 and over a pulley 11 in a housing 12 mounted on a boot panel 13; and a cable operating lever 16 mounted on a pivot 17 on the housing 12. The carrier frame 1 consists of three steel bars 3, 4, 5, of rectangular cross-section, welded together, the bar 3 being pivotally attached at its ends to the brackets 7, and the outer end 9 of the bar 5 being attached to the cable 10. The cable 10 after passing over the pulley 11 is attached by means of a pin 15 to the free end of an arm 14 contained within the housing 12. The arm 14 is rigidly fixed to the lever 16 at the pivot 17. When the frame is in the raised position (i.e. that shown in solid lines in Fig. 2) the cable 10 lies entirely below the pivot 17 so that the weight of the frame acts so as to keep the lever 16 in the position shown in solid lines in Fig. 2. To prevent corrosion and as an anti-theft measure, that portion of the cable 10 which lies between the carrier frame 1, when in the raised position, and the vehicle floor 8 is surrounded by a protective cover 19.
