Abstract
1,189,421. Measuring ground slippage. SOIL MECHANICS (EQUIPMENT) Ltd. Jan. 24, 1969 [Feb. 2, 1968], No. 5501/68. Headings G1N and G1S. A method of measuring the movement of an upper layer 2 of ground which may be subject to slipping over a lower layer 3 comprises placing a bendable rod 7 so that it extends downwards through the upper layer and has its lower end firmly fixed with respect to the lower layer and measuring the angular deflection of the upper end of the rod after a period of time in which the rod has bent as its upper end moves with the moving layer A bore 5 is sunk through the layers 2, 3 and a slip region 4 and a plastics casing 6 is inserted in the bore. The lower end of the rod 7, which may be of steel or a narrow concrete pile, is firmly embedded in the bottom of the bore and the rod extends upwards to a shallow concrete wall 8 at the surface. A steel collar 9 at the top of the casing has a diametral bar 10 which is biased by a spring 11 towards the rod 7. An inclinometer or tiltmeter 12 such as a bubble level containing an electrolyte in which a number of electrodes are immersed is mounted on the upper end of the rod. The electrodes are coupled in a bridge circuit and a cover 13 is provided with a connecter 14 to which cables can be attached for conducting a signal from the tiltmeter to any convenient location.
