Abstract

1,189,334. Polyvinylchloride. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 29 April, 1967 [29 April, 1966], No. 18301/67. Heading C3P. An absorbent copolymer containing at least 98À1% wt. of vinyl chloride and 0À3-1À9% of ethylene is obtained by polymerizing in one stage 100 parts by weight of vinyl chloride in the presence of 150-400 parts of water, 0À05-1 part of a protective colloid, 0À02-1 part of a free radical polymerization initiator and sufficient ethylene to give an autogenous pressure of 60-400 p.s.i.g. at 35-80‹ C. for at least 4 hours. The protective colloid may be methyl cellulose-hydroxyethyl cellulose, polyvinylalcohol, polyethylene oxide, polyethylene glycoldiglycidyl ether of 2,2-bis-(4-hydroxyphenyl) propane, methyl cellulose-sodium alkyl sulphonate-calcium chloride, polyvinylpyrrolidone with secondary suspending agents, methyl cellulose or gelatine. The catalyst may be an acyl peroxide, alkyl peroxydicarbonate or an azo compound. A halogen-containing chain transfer agent may be added.
