Abstract
1,188,957. Making beadlets. SUMITOMO CHEMICAL CO. Ltd. 31 July, 1967 [30 July, 1966; 11 Aug., 1966 (2)], No. 35155/67. Heading A5B. [Also in Division B8] Pharmaceutical and like beadlets or microcapsules are produced by forming an emulsion or dispersion of an active substance in an aqueous solution of a gelable hydrophilic material, dispersing the resultant emulsion or suspension in a solution in a water-immiscible liquid containing a surface active agent, the temperature of the said solution being above the gel-point of the dispersed material, and cooling the system to below the gel point of the dispersion. Thereafter, the beadlets formed may be hardened e.g. by treatment with formaldehyde, and a metal salt, an alkanol or a water absorbing or adsorbing solid substance such as casein, crystelline cellulose, CMC, ZnO, SiO 2 , Mg, Ti, Al and Ba sulphates, CaCO 3 , MgCO 3 , silicic acid and silicates. Suitable gel-forming agents are gelatin, agaragar, albumin, alginates, casein, pectin and fibrinogen. The surface-active agent is preferably non-ionic but may also be cationic or anionic and suitable liquids in which they may be dissolved include animal, vegetable and mineral oils, aromatic hydrocarbons, e.g. benzene, toluene and xylene, chlorinated hydrocarbons e.g. CHCl 3 , CCl 4 and trichloroethylene and organic solvents e.g. ether, petroleum ether and methyl-ethyl ketone. Reference is made to numerous "active substances" largely medicaments but also, dyes, fertilizers, pesticides, rodenticides, anthelmintics, vitamins and other food supplements.
