Index indicators are printed with indexing indicia corresponding to pre-marked marks representative thereof, by a method which comprises sorting out all index indicators, e.g. punched cards 10, requiring a first indicium, e.g. 2, in a first field, e.g. 23, and impunting those index indicators, sorting out all index indicators requiring a second indicium in said first field and imprinting those index indicators, and repeating the sorting and printing operations until all the index indicators are printed with the required indicia in the first field; resorting the index indicators, sorting out the index indicators requiring a first indicium, e.g. 1, in a second field, e.g. 24, and printing those index indicators, sorting out the index indicators requiring a second indicium in said second field and printing those indicators, and repeating the sorting, printing and re-sorting operations until all the index indicators are printed with the required indicia in each of the requisite fields. The indicia may be associated with corresponding coloured code marks. The marks representative of the incia to be printed may be machine readable, the sorting operations being performed mechanically. Such machine readable marks may be punched code marks as shown, magnetic ink character recognition marks (Fig. 10 not shown), optical character recognition marks, or coded grooves on an edge of the index indicator (Fig. 11, not shown). The index indicator may be a card 10 as shown, a portion 70 being cut out therefrom for attachment to a filing folder or the like, or may be the filing folder itself. The colour code system is designed to render wrongly filed folders easily recognizable, and an example of a colour code is given.
