Abstract
118,787. May & Podmore, and May, W. F. M. Feb. 5, 1918. Petrol cans, detachably securing to running- boards.-Spare petrol cans &c. are secured upon the running-board &c. of a motor-vehicle by two hinged vertical members 4, 6, 9, one 6, 9 of which is in two extensible or telescopic parts connected by a spring 10, and the top portion 9 of which is hinged to a top clamping-bar 14 adapted to be detachably secured to the other vertical member 4 by means of a nut 5. The slotted end of the bar 14 and the nut 5, Fig. 4, have interlocking- parts to prevent outward movement of the vertical member, and the nut has a hole to receive the padlock 22. When the holder is folded up as shown in Fig. 7, it is locked in this position by screwing the nut 5 along the rod until its recessed underside 17 engages with the lug 23 upon the joint end of the open frame portion 6 of the two-part member. To prevent rattling, the rod 4 may have projections 24 to embrace the sliding rod 9, or may have a projection to engage in a slot in the sliding rod 9.
