Abstract

1,187,495. Polymers containing fluorine. MINNESOTA MINING & MFG. CO. 20 April, 1967, No. 18313/67. Addition to 1,070,294. Heading C3R. Polymers containing essentially only carbon, oxygen and fluorine in which the ratio of fluorine to carbon is 2: 1 and the ratio of carbon to oxygen is from 2 : 1 to 8: 1, contain units and units where R<SP>1</SP># is a perfluoroalkylene group of 2 or 3 carbon atoms and R<SP>2</SP># is a perfluoroalkylene group of 0 to 21 carbon atoms. The polymers are obtained by pyrolyzing mercury or silver salts of perfluoro dicarboxylic acids containing only carbon, fluorine and oxygen atoms and having at least 6 carbon atoms and containing at least one linking oxygen atom in the carbon chain; carbon dioxide and elemental mercury or silver are obtained as by-products. Salts of other perfiuorodicarboxylic acids may be included as cross-linking agents. Examples are given.
