Abstract

1,187,124. Polyelectrolyte films and filaments. AMICON CORP. 21 Feb., 1968, No. 28418/68. Divided out of 1,187,122. Heading B5B. [Also in Division C3] Membranes and filaments are made by forming into the desired shape an aq. solution containing at least 0À2% by wt. of a synthetic organic polymer having dissociable anionic groups attached to a polymeric chain which without these groups is a water-insoluble film forming resin, at least 0À5% of a synthetic organic polymer having dissociable cationic groups attached to a polymeric chain which without these groups is a water-insoluble film forming resin, each of these polymers having sufficient dissociable groups to render it water soluble in the absence of the other and at least 10% of an acid electrolyte having a pK less than 2À0, and neutralizing the acid to form a solid gel. In examples the polymers were poly (sodium styrene sulphonate) and poly (vinyl benzyl trimethyl ammonium chloride), the acid was hydrochloric or sulphuric, the solution also contained dioxane and was gelled using sodium hydroxide: in Examples 1 and 2 a filament and a sheet respectively were produced by extrusion. Membranes so made are humidity-sensitive.
