Abstract

1,186,921. Radioisotopes. GAZ DE FRANCE. 10 May, 1967 [10 May, 1966], No. 21628/67. Heading G6R. [Also in Division G1] In the measurement of fluid flow rate using the dilution method involving injection of a radio-active isotope into the stream at one point and measurement of the radio-activity and mass of a sample collected at a point downstream of the injection point (see Division G1), the isotope is injected as it is produced by radio-active decay of its parent nuclide. One embodiment of the invention is described with reference to the determination of the rate of flow of methane in conduit 1. The isotope is injected into the gas stream in vapour form through nozzle 16 as it is produced from its parent material housed in a lead sheathed vessel 7. The isotope used is, for example, iodine 132 obtained from tellurium 132, which may be in the form of silver tellurite carried on a porous support in tube 7. In order to transport the daughter material from vessel 7, gas under pressure from chamber 23 forces an eluent (methyl alcohol) contained in tank 14 through chamber 7 to wash through the tellurite. Only the iodine is dissolved, and is carried into the conduit 1, where both the iodine and methyl alcohol are volatilized. Examples of other radio-active isotopes and their parent nuclides from which they are formed are given e.g. Radon 222, obtained from Radium 226, and used in measurement of air flow; Krypton 83, from Rubidium 83; Lead 212 and 211, from Thorium 228 and Actinium 227, respectively. In each case the parent has a much longer half-life than the daughter.
