Abstract

1,186,434. Separating and degrading alphaolefin polymers. J. R. GEIGY A.G. 20 Feb., 1967 [21 Feb., 1966], No. 8013/67. Heading C3P. [Also in Division C5] An oil-soluble solid copolymer of at least two ethylenically unsaturated hydrocarbon monomers which when dissolved at a concentration of 20% by weight in a base oil having a viscosity at 60‹ C. of 6 cs. gives a product having a viscosity at 60‹ C. of not more than 15,000 cp., is obtained from a copolymer of the above type, which has stereospecific and amorphous blocks, and which consists of a mixture of different polymer molecules of different molecular weights by treating (a) to separate therefrom sufficient of the higher molecular weight polymer present in the mixture and/or (b) reduce sufficiently the average molecular weight of the copolymer to give the desired copolymer. The treatment (a) may be by solvent extraction, e.g. with cyclohexane or heptane, centrifuging, or filtration. The treatment (b) may be by subjecting the polymer to shear as a solution or dispersion in an organic solvent or dispersing medium, or a carrier oil, or a plasticizer, or as a molten polymer. Insoluble fraction may be removed by filtration. The starting copolymers may be random or block and of average molecular weight of 400,000 to 2,000,000. They are generally made using Ziegler-Matta type catalysts, in particular by the method described in Specification 1,146,189. Exemplified copolymers are propylene and butene-1 which may be block, and terpolymers of propylene, butene-1, and a C 8 , e.g. octene-1, or a C 12-16 alpha-olefin.
