Abstract

[Also in Division B8] Powder is entrained in a stream of gas, e.g. for machining by abrasion, by passing gas into a closed powder hopper via an inlet duct or system of ducts communicating with the hopper beneath the surface of the powder contained in the hopper and causing the gas to leave the hopper via an outlet duct or system of ducts communicating with the hopper above that surface; the impedance to gas flow into the hopper prevented by the inlet duct or system of ducts is balanced by the impedance to gas flow out of the hopper presented by the outlet duct or system of ducts, whereby gas flow through the hopper is caused to create a suspension of powder particles above the surface of the powder some of which are entrained in the gas flow issuing from the hopper. A hopper 1 is filled, through a pipe normally closed by a cap 5, with powder, e.g. alumina having a particle size of 27 Á or less. At the lower and upper ends of the hopper are connected inlet and outlet ducts 2, 3. The outlet duct 3 ends in a cutting jet 6 whose bore is lined with one or more annular cylinders 7 of sintered alumina, the length of the bore of the cylinder(s) being greater than the diameter; the bore diameter of the duct is at least twice that of the cylinder(s) 7 to minimize abrasion of the duct. In the duct 3 is a solenoid operated pinch-off valve 8. In the inlet duct 2 are an air switch 9, coupled to the valve 8, and a control jet 10 having a bore diameter equal to that of the cylinders) 7, e.g. 1 mm. A non-return valve 11 prevents entry of powder into the duct 2, its resistance to forward flow being small compared with that of the jet 10. The duct 2 is connected to a H.P. air line through an air transformer adjusted to give a regulated output, e.g. 80 p.s.c., means for drying the air may be included. The hopper may contain a wire mesh 12, above the level of the filler, to prevent the entrainment of agglomerations of particles.
