Abstract

1,184,599. Polyamides. RAYCHEM CORP. 20 April, 1967 [21 April, 1966], No. 18143/67. Heading C3R. [Also in Division F2] Cross-linked polyamides are prepared by contacting a shaped structure of a polyamide with a cross-linking agent which is a compound having two or more unconjugated carbon-tocarbon double bonds dispersed in a liquid diluent. Contact, e.g. for 0.1 to 2 hours is sufficient to distribute the cross-linking agent throughout the polyamide. Preferred crosslinking agents are triallyl cyanurate and methylene bisacrylamide; other examples are hexamethylene bis-maleimide, N,N-diallyl acrylamide, tetramethylene diacrylate, glycerol trimethacrylate, the tetra-allyl ether of pentaerythritol, triallyl phosphate, divinyl sebacate and trivinyl trimellitate. Cross-linking may be effected by heating, e.g. at 200-300‹ C. or by ionizing radiation, e.g. a dose of 0À1 to 75 megarads. The cross-linked article may be subjected to a deforming force at a temperature at least equal to its crystalline melting temperature and cooled while subject to this deforming force. This imparts the property of elastic memory as disclosed in Specification 990,235. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 838,412.
