Abstract

1,184,344. Trimming. CREATORS Ltd. 30 March, 1967 [31 March, 1966], No. 14397/66. Heading B6G. A trim for car bodies, furniture or other articles comprises an extruded strip of plastics material of which the front surface displays a decorative finish and the rear surface is provided with an open groove or channel containing an uncured bonding material. An electric conductor is embedded in the bonding material in the groove so that by passing an electric current through the conductor it can be heated to cure the bonding material and bond it to the surface of the car body or other article. The bonding material may be a neoprene-based composition. In Fig. 2 the strip 2 is extruded of crystal clear polyvinyl chloride 3 with a core 4 of polyvinyl chloride having a thin foil 5 of transparent plastics material which is metallized on its surface embedded therein. The metallization may be a vapour deposited coating of aluminium. The rear surface 6 of the extrusion is formed with an undercut open channel 7 which is filled with an uncured neoprene-based heat-curable bonding composition 8 having an insulated resistance wire 9 embedded therein. The ends of the trim are provided with a shaping finish such as shown at 10 by heating in a high frequency jig which is contoured to produce the desired form. This operation closes the ends of the groove 7. The ends of the wire 9 may project from the rear surface of the trim and pass through holes in the body to which the trim is to be secured, or alternatively may be brought out between the rear surface of the extrusion and the body surface, the ends being cut off short and tucked beneath the side zone of the rear surface of the extrusion after bonding to the body.
