Abstract

1,184,233. Shaft seals. GEORGE ANGUS & CO. Ltd. 30 June, 1967 [7 July, 1966; 25 Oct., 1966], Nos. 30359/67 and 47808/66. Divided out of 1,182,426. Heading F2B. In a shaft seal comprising an elastomeric sealing ring having a peripheral sealing surface for engaging a cylindrical surface to be sealed, the sealing surface has a zone which is incompletely circumferential with respect to the cylindrical surface and is formed with at least one ridge or groove extending completely around the zone. In the lip-type seal shown in Fig. 1 and having a flange 4 with a sealing edge 6 formed between two frusto-conical surfaces 7, 8, the surface 7 is formed with circular grooves 13 and the surface 8 is cut obliquely to the seal axis X-X so that the sealing edge 6 is elliptical and has two incompletely circumferential zones on each side of the circumference Y in which zones the ends 15 of the grooves are intercepted obliquely by the sealing edge. In a modification, Fig. 3, the grooves 13 are normal to the shaft axis X-X but the sealing edge is normal to an axis Z-Z slightly oblique to the axis X-X whereby the ends 15 of the grooves 13 are again obliquely intercepted by the sealing edge 6. In the seal shown in Fig. 5, right circular grooves 16 are moulded in the bore of a sealing bush 12 and one end 17 of the bush is cut to a sinuously curved profile. It is stated that in use the grooves 13, 16 act to oppose leakage by a feedback effect irrespective of the direction of rotation of the shaft.
