Abstract
1,184,092. 9,10-Bridged anthracene compounds. EASTMAN KODAK CO. 28 Feb., 1967 [28 Feb., 1966], No. 22292/68. Divided out of 1,184,091. Heading C2C. The invention comprises compounds of the formula where X and Y are carboxy, carbalkoxy, hydroxyalkyl or acyloxyalkyl and Q is one of the groups where R is H, halogen or alkyl and each R<SP>4</SP> is H or both groups R<SP>4</SP> represent a carbon to carbon bond, a bicyclohexano, bicycloheptano, bicyclooctano or bicyclononano group, a 5- or 6-membered cycloaliphatic ring or a group of the formula where R<SP>1</SP> is H, alkyl of 1-4 carbon, atoms or unsubstituted phenyl. The compounds may be prepared by reacting anthracene or a derivative thereof, e.g. a 9,10-bis-acyloxyalkyl anthracene, with a dienophile. The acyloxyalkyl groups may subsequently be converted to hydroxyalkyl groups. Compounds containing carboxy groups may be obtained by oxidation of compounds containing hydroxymethyl groups and subsequently esterified to give compounds containing carbalkoxy groups.
