Abstract

1,183,103. Surgical instruments. R. E. BIDWELL AND S. MISHKIN. 13 March, 1967 [15 March, 1966], No. 11648/67. Heading A5R. Surgical forceps and a curved suturing needle are provided in combination, the forceps comprising jaws 18, 20 awl-holding elements 24, 26 which, when the forceps are closed are each symmetrically arranged about a different axis, the axes being parallel to each other and separated by a distance equal to the radius of curvature of the needle. As shown, the forceps 10 comprise an elongate body in the form of two body sections pivotally connected by a pivot pin 16 and each comprising an intermediate body portion connecting a jaw 18 or 20 and a finger grip 24 or 26, the jaws and finger grips being offset. The jaws, which have facing needle gripping surfaces 22 formed thereon, cooperate to hold the needle 14. The finger grips, are each formed with a respective cooperating lateral extension 30 or 28 adapted to abut each other thereby to limit the relative closing movement of the two body sections. The forceps are arranged such that rotation T of the forceps about the axis X symmetrically bi-secting the finger grips causes the suturing needle 14 held by the jaws to move in a circular path which has a radius equal to the radius of curvature of the suturing needle.
