Abstract

1,183,021. Polymers of unsaturated N- methylol amides. DYNAMIT NOBEL A.G. 10 Jan., 1968 [11 Jan., 1967], No. 1509/68. Heading C3P. Polymers containing free N-methylol groups are prepared by polymerizing an N-methylol derivative of an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid amide in an aqueous medium using a free radical forming catalyst and in the presence of 2-50 mol. per cent (based on the N-methylol derivative) of a water-soluble secondary amine, whereby a solution of the desired polymer is obtained. Polymerization is advantageously effected in the presence of a chain transfer agent, e.g. a C 1 -C 4 alkanol, and the polymers can be isolated by precipitation with acetone. N-methylol monomers specified are N-methylol-acrylamide and N-methylolmethacrylamide. Specified as secondary amines are dimethylamine, diethylamine, diethanolamine, morpholine and ethyleneimine. Potassium persulphate is exemplified as a free radical catalyst. The polymers are crosslinkable and are useful as binding agents and adhesives, and in paints, coatings and films.
