Abstract

1,182,996. Accelerometers. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES. Feb. 29, 1968, No.9822/68. Heading G1K. An accelerometer including an element for detecting movement of a seismic mass 1 has the mass 1 supported by a spring 4 and coupled to the detecting element by an intermediate spring 5, the stiffness of the spring 5 being such that for normal acceleration of the mass 1 the coupling is effectively rigid but for abnormal acceleration the spring 5 can flex. The springs 4, 5 may be of disc form. Two intermediate springs (11, 12, Fig. 4, not shown) may be provided which, in the normal position, press equally in opposite directions on the detecting element. The spring 5 or springs (11, 12) are attached to the mass 1 and to an intermediate linking member 3 which is normally kept in contact with both the mass 1 and with a coupling member 2 (10) by the spring 5 or springs (11, 12). The supporting and intermediate springs may be cantilever leaf springs 16, 21, Fig. 6, a coupling member 20 attached to the detecting element projecting through a hole 19 in the support spring 16 and the intermediate spring 21 pressing against the coupling member 20 and the spring 16 adjacent the hole 19. The support spring may be bi-metallic with temperature co-efficient arranged to compensate for temperature variation in the detecting element, which element may be a piezo-resistive element.
