A method of erecting large capacity tanks such as gasholders, oil tanks or silos consists in erecting a bottom shell 3 of circular crossseotion having a helically extending top edge 4 on a prepared base 2, adjustably mounting a lifting device 6, 7, 13 on shoulders 5 arranged on the shell 3, lifting an upper shell 8 relative to the bottom shell 3 by means of the lifting device and then displacing the shell 8 along the helix of the shell 3. The lifting device includes an adjustable jack 13, guide rollers 14, 14<SP>1</SP>, a control link 17, a lifting plate, distance plates 10 and bias control means for details of which the Specification should be referred to.
