In a photo-electric mixer of two electric-signals, light from a source 1 intensity modulated by the first electric-signal S1 is plane polarized at 3 before passing through an electro-optical solid state material 4 whose electric field is provided by the second electric-signal vs, the issuing radiation of varying plane of polarisation is then alternated between photo-electric detectors 6 and 7 at the frequency of signal vs, photo-electric outputs being combined to provide the mixing signal sc. The electro-optical material 4 may be KTN (Potassium tantaloniobate) or KDP (potassium di-hydrogen phosphate) and has a bias field supply BS to ensure the rotation of the plane of polarisation is linearly dependent upon the second electrical signal vs. The source 1 is a gelium arsenide diode and detectors 6, 7 are silicon photo-cells.
