Abstract
1,182,734. Separating gas mixtures. BECKMAN INSTRUMENTS Inc. 14 June, 1968 [28 June, 1967], No. 28442/68. Heading B1L. [Also in Division C1 Ozone is removed from a gas stream containing sulphur dioxide and ozone by adsorbing the ozone with alkylthio mercury chloride, dialkylthio mercury alkylthio lead chloride, dialkylthio lead or a mixture thereof. The adsorbent is preferably coated on a granular support having a large surface area, and may be produced by reacting mercuric or lead chloride with a mercaptan, preferably ethyl mercaptan. Hydrogen sulphide and/or mercaptans may also be removed from the gas stream by adsorbing them with mercuric lead chloride, preferably coated on a granular support. The invention is applicable to removing impurities from a sulphur dioxide stream before it passes through an SO 2 analyser. The gas is passed through a scrubber 12 containing the adsorbents on the granular support (e.g. PTFE), which may be provided with a heater 20 to maintain the temperature at about 40C.
