Abstract

1,182,306. Photographic materials for diffusion transfer. INTERNATIONAL POLAROID CORP. 11 Jan., 1967, No. 25460/69. Divided out of 1,182,302. Heading H5R. [Also in Division G2] A photographic material for the diffusion transfer process comprises a support having a silver halide emulsion containing an opaque substance in a ratio by weight of substance to silver being at least 40: 1 and optionally a second layer containing opaque substance in which case the overall ratio by weight of substance to silver is between 20 and 70 to 1. The material may also have an overcoated layer containing a silver precipitating agent or alternatively the developer may contain such an agent and a polymer. When the material is image-wise exposed and developed in the presence of a silver halide solvent, a positive image is formed in the layer containing the silver precipitating agent and the negative image produced in the emulsion is masked by the opaque substance. In the examples, a support is coated with a gelatino silver halide emulsion, titanium dioxide and optionally silica or a humectant (see Specifications 1,182,308 and 1,182,307) and optionally overcoated with a gelatino titanium dioxide layer. The material is image-wise exposed and developed in an alkaline solution containing a developer, a silver halide solvent, sodium carboxymethylcellulose and development nuclei to produce a silver image in the carboxymethylcellulose layer deposited. Alternatively, a development nuclei layer containing sodium sulphide, lead and cadmium acetate may be coated over the surface layer of the material. The material may incorporate an intensifying fluorescent screen preferably between the second layer and an image-receiving layer and be used for X-ray photography. The opaque substance may also be calcium carbonate, magnesium oxide or barium sulphate or the substance may alternatively be produced in the emulsion and optionally in the second layer after image-wise exposure of the material.
