Abstract

1,182,061. Pneumatic tyre manufacture. PIRELLI S.p.A. 12 March, 1968 [15 March, 1967], No. 11904/68. Heading B7C. A method of manufacturing a pneumatic tyre comprises positioning the beads 28, 29 of a carcass 27 on rings 7, 13, shaping the carcass by moving the rings towards each other and by pressurizing the interior thereof, squeezing the shaped carcass axially inwardly using caps 23, 24, which have an inner profile which is axially narrower than that corresponding to the desired form of the freely shaped carcass, and maintaining the carcass in the squeezed condition while applying either a tread band or a breaker or breaker strips followed by a tread band to the radially outer surface of the carcass between the axially innermost edges of the caps. An expansible diaphragm 6 may be used in the shaping of the carcass. Sectors 17 pivotally supported on flange 11 of hub 10 may be used to resist the axially inwards thrust which occurs during shaping at the bead portions of the tyre.
