Abstract

1,181,965. Controlling burners. CLARKE & SMITH INDUSTRIES Ltd. 12 June, 1967 [10 June, 1966], No. 25891/66. Heading F4T. In a burner ignition and control system in which a. high voltage is applied to a probe for igniting the burner and the probe can be connected to detection means to detect flame presence, the detector is protected from damage by high voltage from the ignition circuit, a pair of resistors 34, 36 being connected in series in the lead between the flame detection probe and the amplifier circuit and a neon tube 39 or other voltage dependent impedance device such as a Zener diode is connected to the junction between the resistors to shunt the amplifier input if high voltage is applied to the probe. The secondary winding of the ignition transformer 60 is connected to the probe through a spark gap 64 or a neon tube, high voltage capacitor or a high resistor. In operation, closing of a start switch 50 energizes a relay B to open the valve supplying gas to the pilot and to energize the ignition transformer 60. When ignition takes place the detection of a flame by the probe, switch 50 having been released, causes the amplifier to operate a relay A to light an indicator and open the gas supply valve to the main burner. If the pilot flame is extinguished relay A drops out to shut off the main valve and after a delay caused by a capacitor 54 relay B is de-energized and the pilot gas supply shut off. The burner may be stopped at any time by opening a switch 48 to cut off the voltage supply to the gas valves.
