A method of forming a subcellular preparation comprises subjecting a biological cellular material to a pressure of at least 50 atmospheres in a vessel and releasing the pressure by suddenly permitting the material to escape from the vessel through outlet means measuring at least 0.5 mm. across. The cellular material may be tissue cells or bacteria and may be in association with a fluid medium. A suitable apparatus is described.
