Abstract
1,181,617. Continuous production of polyamide foams. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. 20 Sept., 1968 [20 Oct., 1967], No. 44796/68. Headings C3C and C3R. Polyamide foam is continuously produced by melting a mixture of a lactam, e.g. caprolactam, with a catalyst, e.g. an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal formate, and an activator and an expanding or a compound which functions as both, e.g. an isocyanate, polymerizing the melt with vigorous stirring to form a prepolymer having a relative viscosity of 1À15-2À5 (as a solution of 1 g. of prepolymer in 100 ml. mcresol at 20‹ C.), transferring the prepolymer to a mould and polymerizing to completion with shaping and foaming. In the example caprolactam, sodium formate and a silica gel are heated, the melt is cooled and hexamethylene diisocyanate and an alkylene oxide-silicone block copolymer (as pore regulator) are added, the mixture is melted, fed to a reactor, stirred and the prepolymer produced is then fed to a mould where it is polymerized to completion with foaming. An apparatus is illustrated (not shown).
