Abstract

1,181,521. Reactors. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 19 May, 1967 [20 May, 1966], No. 22714/66. Heading G6C. In a nuclear reactor, the moderator core structure 10 is supported within and spaced from the floor of a concrete pressure vessel 11 by a support structure which includes a plurality of load-bearing support pads 17, each pad comprising a casing containing a number of transversely - extending metallic sheets arranged so as to define voids between adjacent sheets. Preferably a large number of thin sheets of double-corrugated stainless steel foil are arranged alternately with sheets of flat stainless steel foil. As shown in Fig. 1, the core structure 10 is supported on a number of support plates 13 which are in turn supported on upper pads 14. The lower end face of each pad 14 is supported, through a steel pillar 15, on an intermediate pad 16. The ends of each pillar 15 are part-spherical to allow limited horizontal movement to occur between the pads 14, 16. Each intermediate pad 16 is supported, through a support pad 17, on a lower pad 18 which is located directly on the steel liner 12 of the pressure vessel 11, as by keying. Water cooling ducts 19 for the concrete of the pressure vessel 11 pass directly under each lower pad 18. Thermal insulation 20 is provided over the liner 12 and around the pads 16, 18 and support pads 17. The support pads 17 provide thermal insulation between the pillars 15 and liner 12, this being necessary because of the presence of hot reactor coolant fluid in the space 24 around the pillars 15. In an alternative arrangement, the insulation 20 may be replaced by a large number of support pads, similar to the pads 17 described above but hexagonal in section, and arranged to form a continuous insulating layer.
