Abstract
1,181,431. Discharge apparatus. ROCKET RESEARCH CORP. 11 Jan., 1967, No. 1429/67. Heading H1X. [Also in Division F1] A pulsed plasma accelerator for generating propulsion thrust comprises a pair of spaced parallel electrodes 32, 34 in an open-ended insulating chamber 36, a flux concentrator (not shown) disposed laterally of the container and means for delivering and injecting a vaporizable and ionizable propellant into the closed end of said chamber. The electrodes 32, 34 are connected across a storage capacitor 38 and a highvoltage supply. The propellant may be solid, liquid or gaseous. A gaseous propellant may be injected through an orifice 42 either in discrete pulses on command or continuously through a flow modulator (Fig. 5, not shown) comprising a spring member vibrated by a solenoid. A solid propellant may be introduced repetitively in the form of a wire by mechanical means. A combustible combination of liquids or gases may be used. Ionization may be enhanced by radioactive material. The flux concentrator may comprise iron particles dispersed in an epoxy resin or compressed or sintered within a protective sheath of epoxy resin, or may comprise alternate laminations of iron and insulation (Figs. 6 to 7B, not shown). The accelerator may be used for satellite attitude control and station keeping or for primary propulsion of deep space probes and interplanetary space vehicles.
