1,180,486. Programmed control of knitting machines. UNIVERSAL MASCHINENFABRICK DR. RUDOLF SCHIEBER G.m.b.H. June 1, 1967 [June 24, 1966], No.25221/67. Heading G3N. An apparatus for producing a programme for the control of a fabric producing textile machine comprises an optical line scanning means for scanning a pattern discontinuously from one recording position to the next, the programme recording means being supplied from the optical means with an output which is modified to take account of mesh size, properties of the yarn, and strength of the fabric to be produced. The programme carrier may be magnetic tape, photographic film, punched tape, or projections on a chain etc. The initial pattern is produced manually and is scanned in a series of parallel lines by photo-cells 46a-e signals from which are fed into a circuit including a selector switch 41, set dependent on the gauge of the yarn, and further switches 41a-e are set depending on the nature and properties of the yarn, and a switch 43 dependent on the required strength of the knitted material. Assuming the switches are set in the positions shown, a pattern is moved discontinuously in a series of steps relative to a head carrying a number of photo-cells, normally each photo-cell recording on a separate track on the recording medium. The scanning device is provided with a pulse generator comprising a disc interrupting light from a lamp to a photo-cell, pulses from which are applied to a counter 35, which at a determined number moves the head to a new position. The arrangement is stated to be suitable for a flat bed knitting machine provided with jaquard and narrowing attachments.
