Heading C2C. [Also in Division C3] Oligomers of the formula wherein X represents a hydroxy group, alkoxy group, aryloxy group, mercapto group, alkylthio group, arylthio group, carboxyl group, esterified carboxylic acid group, amino group or halogen atom, R<SP>1</SP> is a tetravalent group having at least one 6-membered ring, the carboxyl amino group and group X are each directly bonded to respective different carbon atoms of the ring of R<SP>1</SP>, each carbon atom of R<SP>1</SP> which carries a substituent X is adjacent to a carbon atom of R<SP>1</SP> which carries a nitrogen atom, and R<SP>2</SP> is a trivalent group having at least one 6- membered ring, the three carbonyl groups bonded thereto each being directly bonded to a different carbon atom of the group R<SP>2</SP>, two carbonyl groups forming an acid anhydride linkage being bonded to adjoining carbon atoms of the ring of R 2 , may be obtained by reacting an acid halide of the formula wherein Y is a halogen atom, with an amino compound of the formula at a temperature not higher than 30‹ C. The reaction may be carried out in an organic solvent which dissolves at least one of the reactants employing 2 mols. of the acid halide per mole of the amino compound. Suitable groups R<SP>1</SP> may be selected from the following: wherein Z is a carbon-carbon bond, an alkylene group, -O-, -NH-, -SO 2 -, -CO-, -S- or -CONH- through which the aromatic nuclei are bonded, and suitable groups R<SP>2</SP> may be selected from the following: The above oligomers may be polymerized to give polyimides (see Division C3).
