Abstract

1,179,279. Photo-electric currency authentication. TRANSMARINE CORP. Feb.17, 1967 [Feb. 24, 1966], No. 7755/67. Heading G1A. In an apparatus for authentication of paper securities having parallel equally spaced straight lines and comprising means to receive and hold a security in a substantially flat position and move it into and in a testing area, a reticle having equally spaced parallel lines corresponding in number per unit of length to those expected on the security, disposed close to and parallel with lines on the security to create moira fringes when the security is moved in the test area, and means to pass light through the portion having parallel lines to a photocell, a counter provides a validation signal when a predetermined minimum number of light-dark areas are monitored in response to movement of the security through a predetermined distance relative to the reticle. The invention is described with reference to dollar bills in a change machine in which the testing is initiated by a micro-switch operated by the leading edge of the note during insertion. The lamp is run below its rated voltage to increase the infrared, and the reticle in front of the photo-cell which is screened apart from a small aperture may have parallel lines in the direction of insertion or at right angles thereto, the note being moved at right angles to the direction of insertion after reaching the test area in the former case. The note may be further validated by the amplitude of the signal resulting from the lightdark contrast and a relid test may initiate a general inspection of the note by a single source on one side and a plurality of detectors on the other. Four light-dark pulses produced at the bottom of apertures by a small movement may be sufficient, and may be counted on a pair of flipflops, after amplification and shaping. A satisfactory note is taken into the machine by a pair of motor driven rollers and the change pay out is initiated. Two areas may be tested by two reticle devices.
