Abstract
1,178,868. Discharge tubes. BODENSEEWERK PERKIN-ELMER & CO. G.m.b.H. 30 June, 1967 [1 July, 1966; 21 Dec., 1966], No. 30239/67. Heading H1D. [Also in Division G1] In the measurement of the concentration of vapours of halogens or halogen compounds, wherein the vapour flows past two electrodes, one of which is sensitized, so that the current flowing between the electrodes is indicative of the concentration of halogen or its compound present, the " sensitized " electrode comprises a body which is pervious to alkali atoms and contains an alkali compound which is thermally decomposed to produce the alkali. In one embodiment, the electrode includes a ceramic tube 10, Fig. 1, containing an alkali compound 11 and surrounded by a coil 13 serving both as the electrode being connected via voltage source 15 and amplifier 16 to a second mesh electrode 14, and as a heating coil. A further electrode (44), Fig. 6 (not shown), may be provided which is inserted into the alkali compound and is connected via voltage source (45) to coil 13 whereby diffusion of the alkali atoms may be adjusted electrolytically. In a modification, the alkali compound 21, Fig. 2 (not shown), is enclosed in the space between a ceramic tube 17 and casing 22, together with a heating coil 23. The associated electrode is provided by a wire coil 19 and the second electrode by a wire 20 down the centre of the tube 17. In a second embodiment, the " sensitized " electrode comprises a platinum capillary tube (24), Fig. 3 (not shown), filled with the alkali compound, the electrode being heated either by being coiled 25 round a flame, Fig. 4, or by applying an A.C. voltage across its ends, Fig. 5 (not shown). It is found that the alkali atoms diffuse along the grain boundaries of the tube, diffusion being aided by the presence of carbon in the filling. Examples of fillings for this embodiment are graphite mixed with an alkali compound or a carbonaceous alkali compound, e.g. alkali alcoholate. This latter embodiment may be used in conjunction with a flame detector (31), Fig. 5 (not shown).
