Abstract

1,178,853. 'Melting and refining metals'. K.W. STOOKEY. Feb.9, 1967 [March 2, 1966], No.6252/67. Heading C7D. [Also in Division F3- F4] A water cooled or refractory lined shaft furnace 10 for melting and refining metals, has an enlarged bottom end 36 so defining an annular open space 70 about the bottom portion of the furnace burden 65. Tuyeres 40 fed with blast air from bustle pipe 38 and hydrocarbon fuel from line 44 in a desired ratio, fire tangentially Fig. 3 (not shown) into the annular space 70, causing improved contact for better reaction between the surfaces of the slag 56 and the molten metal in the recess 52 at the bottom of the furnace. An auxiliary valve controlled stack (78, Fig.2, not shown) leads combustion products off from the space 70 during start up, so that they do not pass through the burden, thereby melting it and causing flooding of the hearth before conditions at the bottom of the furnace are suitable for tapping the metal produced. When normal operating conditions have been attained, the valved stack is closed and the combustion gases pass normally up through the burden 65. To increase and control the furnace throughout, fines, chips, fluxing material, ferrosilicon and turnings may be added directly into the annular space 70 instead of being top loaded into the furnace. The composition of the metal melt can therefore be quickly controlled. The charge is made up of pelletized, sintered and partially reduced ores, alloys, scrap, coke and a fluxing material. Zinc and lead as well as iron may be refined in such a furnace.
