Abstract
1,178,690. Digital shaft encoders. MOORE REED (INDUSTRIAL) Ltd. 19 Dec., 1967 [20 Sept., 1966], No. 41983/66. Heading G4H. An angular position transducer comprises a contact 5 displaceable from a datum position by rotation of input shaft 2, a contact 7 at the datum position and a scanning arm having brushes 9, 9<SP>1</SP> engaging contacts 7 and 5 in turn as it rotates. The arm shaft 3 is driven by a motor 8 which may be a mains synchronous motor. The start output from contact 7 is used to set a flipflop and the differentially timed output from contact 5 resets it. The duration-significant signal from the flip-flop gates clock pulses to a counter the value in which then represents the angle of shaft 2. The clock pulses may be derived from the mains if the motor 8 is synchronous. Alternatively, the motor may be driven synchronously by pulses from a clock pulse generator which are also applied to the gate. The apparatus may be arranged to digitise more than one revolution of shaft 2 either by preventing the flip-flop being reset in the first revolution of the scanning arm or by arranging that the contact 5 and the scanning arm move along spiral or helical paths.
