Abstract
1,178,636. Styrene/maleic anhydride cotelomers. FARBWERKE HOECHST A.G. 31 Jan., 1968 [31 Jan., 1967]. No. 4944/68. Heading C3P. Cotelomers of styrene and maleic anhydride of average molecular wt. 700-3000 are produced by cotelomerizing the monomers at 150- 270‹ C. using as telogen an alkyl substituted aromatic hydrocarbon or an alkoxy or halogen derivative thereof, a ketone or a halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbon, the reaction being carried out in the absence of any free radical forming catalyst by the action of heat only. The telogen may be toluene, a xylene, a trimethylbenzene, ethyl or a diethyl benzene, cumene, cymene, acetone, methyl isobutyl (or isopropyl) ketone, chloroform or dichloromethane. The monomers may be stabilized with hydroquinone.
