A device for attaching a net to a rope along one edge comprises a channelled guide bar 3 over which the edge meshes of a net are engaged and in the channel of which a twine 5 is fed from a supply. A pair of adjacent ropes are advanced around the end of a drum 13 over which the twine 5 and net 2 pass as the drum periodically revolves and the net is advanced by cam operated grippers 8 projecting through a slot 7 in the guide bar 3. The drum is slotted at one edge and whilst periodically stationary, a member 20 is lowered to project the twine into the slot. Simultaneously a member 29 engages the loop of twine so produced and extends it sideways whereupon a hooked needle is projected between the ropes to engage the loop and subsequently draw it back between the ropes. The members are disengaged and a stripper member 48 having a head 51 revolves to take the yarn from the hook and pass it round the ropes and simultaneously about the shank of a knotter lever 52. The two heads co-operate and the lever 52 retains the loop which is subsequently drawn back through itself and the whole hitch is tightened by the loop being gripped between a clamp 79 and the drum 13 and a pusher 75 engaging it to draw it tight. The action of the components is derived from a pair of cylindrical cams 24, 36 having cam surfaces and slots engaging followers attached to levers acting them, and the drum is periodically advanced by a Geneva mechanism driven from the cam drum shaft.
